Versace Spring/Summer 2020
For Versace’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection, Donatella Versace, creative director of the luxury brand, paid tribute to her late friend and vocalist of the band The Prodigy, Keith Flint, who passed away last March. The artist had incomparable style and experimented a lot with hair colors, which gave him an aura of confidence and fierceness. Donatella’s menswear line this season was designed to fit Flint’s exceptional qualities: rebellion and confidence.
Donatella steered away from basic stereotyped masculinity. She made a collection for fearless men who are not afraid of self-expression. Leopard prints, all-leather looks, bleached tie-dye, and colored hair models all emphasized Flint’s inspirational presence in the collection.
The setting radiated a fresh youthful vibe that Donatella achieved by the runway design. In the center, there was a race car, representing the risky nature of adolescence and the nature of manhood. After all, “when a man becomes a man the first thing he wants is a car,” she said. Pink flowers covered the race-car, which also hinted towards the freshness of youth. The collection itself was a concoction between contemporary and classic.
The show opened with half black half grey jackets and coats paired with edgy leather pants. It later progressed to more laid-back, exciting fits that expressed the boldness of the Versace man: these consisted of colorful sneakers, leopard prints, relaxed vibrant shirts alongside fringes.
Despite the contemporary nature of the collection, traces of the late 90’s classic fashion could be found in the line: from cinched blazers to denim vests. Donatella also accessorized her models with tinted sunglasses, a popular trend that took the world by storm in the 90’s. Bootcut pants and turtlenecks made many appearances on the runway which also brought a lot of 90’s nostalgia to the audience.
Basic suits and ties were styled in a unique way that preserved their timelessness yet update them to fit the ever-changing fashion world. Donatella managed to make suits exciting and one of a kind by adding a dash of sparkle, pairing them with denim shirts, and mixing fabric.
The stunning supermodels who graced the runway were no less astounding. The Hadid sisters, Stella Maxwell, and Irina Shayk all made appearances on the runway dressed in exceptional pieces that are made of leather, denim, and leopard — the prominent factors of the collection.
