Mayka: The New Fashion Label Disrupting The Industry
Hottest news this summer is May Orfy's exciting brand Mayka. Ever since we saw May's first designs, we became sure her print on the fashion industry is not something to pass unnoticed. May Orfy is also the the fashion-forward twin of Malak Orfy, one of the eminent interior designers in the region. We can't help but fall for the talent apparent in the powerful duo and their bond that helps them grow in their different fields. Mayka, based in Dubai, launched July 7 and became the talk of the town. The groundbreaking launch of Mayka is just May Orfy walking gracefully into the fashion field.
Looking back at May's background, she had inherent interest in fashion that budded in a family that's always a la mode. May looked up to her grandmother who sparked her interest in fashion and served as her first style icon. May first studied graphic design at the American University of Dubai, even though she still got to express herself artistically it was clear that was not her calling. Keen on integrating fashion into her life, May started with courses in the afternoons. After hustling between her studies and pursuing more knowledge in fashion May came to a determining decision. On her third year of college, May dropped out of graphic design to start over, going to study fashion and pattern making in Esmod Dubai. Never looking back, May knew the right decision won't be the easiest but would be worth it all the way. In a long journey, May prepped herself for making her dream come true.
The 25 year old May Orfy aims high for her rising brand. Her goal is to reach unprecedented levels and sell internationally in the biggest retailers. First and foremost, May seeks for her buyers to radiate confidence and have a unique experience when they wear Mayka. Without a doubt, Mayka brings novelty to the table and here's why: As a twin inspired by sisterhood, May translated her inspiration into sister pieces, pair pieces that are similar in identity but not identical. She even named each piece after the word "sister" in 20 different languages. This original idea's roots sprouted from May loving to dress like her twin as a child, while Malak wasn't a big fan of twinning. Today in her designs, May showed the difference that can happen between two twins, yet at the end of the day they're still sisters, similar in nature. One of the pair designs are The Florals, two dresses different in color that give the same easy-going flowery vibe with the ruffles and flowy silhouette. It's clear one of May's inspirations is the rich latin culture with all its vibrance, life, and carefree attitude.
May lets a fun and feminine vibe shine through her work. Other sister pieces include an edgy yet classic suit in the colors white and olive. May Orfy's personal favorite in her debut collection is the rope jacket that shows how much she loves to experiment and keep boredom far away. Still, May focuses on creating versatile and timeless pieces regardless of trends, for she never believed in the mainstream dictating her designs but she rather creates her own trends. Wanting to start out with the best quality and details, May ensures she maintains the desired outcome while staying affordable.
The promising Mayka is taking the Middle East's fashion scene by storm and it's just their first collection. One sister piece after another, Mayka is becoming an inspiring phenomenon of intertwining ideas that resulted in wearable art. Shipping Mayka all over the world, May Orfy believes in the power of social media to bring people closer to one another and make brands reach further. Mayka surely landed in the field gracefully and stood out with the vibrant versatile designs that are perfect for every elegant lady who seeks confidence in a timeless piece.
